LIVELIHOODS & ECONOMIC RESILIENCE

WHY IT MATTERS

The viability of cocoa farming depends on multiple factors, including productivity, costs, diversification opportunities, access to services and market conditions. Strengthening economic resilience can help farming households manage risks, invest in their farms and respond to changing circumstances over time.

OUR APPROACH

Transparence Cacao promotes a comprehensive approach to economic resilience combining premium payments, farmer coaching, diversification activities and access to financial services.

The programme works with producer organisations and farmers to increase understanding of income drivers and support locally adapted improvement strategies.

Respect for human rights is a fundamental requirement of the Transparence cacao programme.

OUR LONG
TERM AMBITIONS

Transparence Cacao aims to strengthen the resilience and viability of farming households across participating origins and continue developing approaches that support progress towards living income. The programme seeks to expand access to training, diversification opportunities and support services that contribute to long-term economic resilience.

in practice

Understanding living income to guide action
Improving farmer livelihoods requires understanding both income and production costs. Transparence Cacao therefore conducts regular household income assessments using the ANKER methodology to identify opportunities for strengthening household resilience and long-term farm viability. Studies carried out in Côte d’Ivoire between 2023 and 2024 covered more than 500 farming households and showed that participating farmers exceeded the 2025 ANKER living income reference on average. The assessments also highlighted the importance of diversification, access to services and cost reduction initiatives. Between 2023 and 2024, average production costs fell from 447,761 FCFA to 391,586 FCFA, helping improve overall farm economics.
Strengthening resilience through diversification
Building resilient farming households requires sources of income beyond cocoa alone. Transparence Cacao therefore supports diversification, entrepreneurship and access to locally relevant economic opportunities alongside cocoa production. In 2026 in Côte d’Ivoire, a new pilot initiative developed with Cémoi Côte d’Ivoire and GIZ is supporting 16 cooperatives and 2,000 producers, with a particular focus on women and young people. The programme combines entrepreneurship development, agricultural services and community support mechanisms, including 250 rural entrepreneurs, 20 youth associations and the creation of 10 Maison du Planteur centres to strengthen long-term economic resilience in cocoa-growing communities.
