Within Transparence Cacao, biodiversity includes both natural ecosystems and agricultural biodiversity. This includes forests, habitats, ecological corridors, wildlife and locally adapted cocoa genetic resources that contribute to the long-term resilience and diversity of cocoa production systems.

OUR APPROACH
Transparence Cacao includes requirements aimed at protecting ecosystems and biodiversity in cocoa farms.
Working with producer organisations and farmers, the programme promotes practices such as maintaining vegetation cover, establishing buffer zones and biological corridors where relevant, and protecting habitats for wildlife and protected species. Producer organisations are also required to raise farmers’ awareness of ecosystem and wildlife protection and to identify species present on farms.

Restoring ecosystems through agroecological cocoa landscapes
In Peru and Ecuador, the Agroecological Regenerative Cocoa initiative continued supporting ecosystem restoration, biodiversity enhancement and the integration of cocoa systems within ecological corridors through partnerships with Alliance Bioversity CIAT and World Agroforestry.

In several origins, producer organisations continued nursery activities based on locally adapted planting material. These initiatives aim to strengthen access to planting material suited to local conditions while supporting the preservation of agricultural biodiversity and farmer knowledge.
