Within Transparence Cacao, biodiversity includes both natural ecosystems and agricultural biodiversity. This includes forests, habitats, ecological corridors, wildlife and locally adapted cocoa genetic resources that contribute to the long-term resilience and diversity of cocoa production systems.

OUR APPROACH
Transparence Cacao promotes a participatory approach to biodiversity conservation that combines ecosystem protection, restoration activities and farmer engagement.
Working with producer organisations, farmers and local partners, the programme supports the identification, conservation and restoration of ecologically valuable areas within cocoa-producing landscapes. Particular attention may also be given to the preservation and dissemination of locally adapted cocoa genetic resources where permitted by national regulations.
Environmental priorities are determined through environmental risk and opportunity assessments and translated into locally adapted action plans.

Restoring ecosystems through agroecological cocoa landscapes
In Peru and Ecuador, the Agroecological Regenerative Cocoa initiative continued supporting ecosystem restoration, biodiversity enhancement and the integration of cocoa systems within ecological corridors through partnerships with Alliance Bioversity CIAT and World Agroforestry.
Supporting locally adapted cocoa genetic resources
In several origins, producer organisations continued nursery activities based on locally adapted planting material. These initiatives aim to strengthen access to planting material suited to local conditions while supporting the preservation of agricultural biodiversity and farmer knowledge.
